Must-Have Safety Equipment for Guyana Worksites
Most safety buying guides tell you what products exist. This one tells you what is available in Guyana right now - at The Hardware Depot in Georgetown - and what to check before you buy each one. No filler. Just the information that matters when you are standing in front of a shelf or placing a bulk order for your crew.

1. Lanyards and fall arrest equipment

In Guyana's construction, oil, and utilities sectors, working at height remains one of the leading causes of serious injury. A lanyard also called a langard is the connection point between a worker and their anchor, and choosing the wrong one is not a minor error.

There are two main types in common use:

  • Shock-absorbing lanyards - designed to reduce the impact force on the body during a fall. Required for most general construction and site work. The lanyard extends to absorb energy, which means you need to account for the additional drop distance when calculating clearance.
  • Self-retracting lanyards (SRLs) / Personal Fall Limiters - lock instantly when a fall begins, limiting the fall distance to inches rather than feet. The MSA Workman Personal Fall Limiter available at The Hardware Depot is a compact, lightweight SRL rated for industrial use and compliant with major fall protection standards.
What to check before you buy: Always verify the working load limit, the fall clearance requirement (especially with shock-absorbing types), and whether the connector fits your harness D-ring. A lanyard that does not fit your harness hardware is not a safety device - it is a hazard.

2. Dust masks and respiratory protection

A dust mask - sometimes called a dusk mask - is one of the most searched-for safety items in Guyana, and one of the most misunderstood. Not all dust masks offer the same protection, and using the wrong type in the wrong environment can give workers a false sense of security.

The key distinctions:

  • N95 respirators filter at least 95% of airborne particles. The Moldex 2300 N95 is a NIOSH-approved filtering facepiece respirator - the correct choice for construction dust, fine particulates, and general industrial airborne hazards. It is not the same as a basic surgical or cloth mask.
  • Half-face respirators with replaceable cartridges - necessary for chemical vapors, paint fumes, and environments where particulate filtration alone is not sufficient. The Polygard respirator fits this category.
  • Basic disposable dust masks - suitable for nuisance dust only (sweeping, light sanding). Not appropriate for silica dust, chemical exposure, or any environment requiring certified respiratory protection.
The rule to remember: If the hazard is regulated, the mask needs to be certified. "Looks like a mask" is not the same as "functions as a respirator." Always match the respirator to the specific contaminant and exposure level.

3. Reflective strips and high-visibility marking tape

Reflective strips - also referred to as reflector strips or reflective tape - serve two distinct functions on a worksite: they mark hazards, and they make moving objects visible. Both are safety-critical applications, and the product you choose should match the use case.

Common applications in Guyana:

  • Vehicle and equipment marking - applied to the sides and rear of trucks, heavy machinery, and trailers so they are visible in low-light or nighttime conditions. For this use, look for high-intensity retro-reflective tape that meets road transport standards.
  • Staircase and floor edge marking - anti-slip tape with a reflective component applied to step edges, ramps, and walkways. We carry black anti-slip tape and black/yellow anti-slip tape for this application.
  • Workwear marking - retro-reflective strips sewn or iron-on applied to vests, jackets, and coveralls. Standard hi-vis vests in our range already incorporate sewn reflective tape to comply with high-visibility garment requirements.
  • Arrow tape and directional marking - used to mark evacuation routes, hazard zones, and traffic flow on site.
What the data tells us: "Reflective strip," "reflector strip," and "reflective strips" together represent nearly 500 searches per month in Guyana. If you have been looking for this product locally, it is available at The Hardware Depot.

4. Fire extinguishers - choosing the right type for your workplace

A fire extinguisher is one of those purchases that most businesses delay until it becomes a compliance issue. By that point, the product has already been needed. Every occupied workplace in Guyana should have at minimum one functioning, maintained fire extinguisher - and for most commercial and industrial operations, that means multiple units placed at accessible intervals.

Fire extinguishers are classified by the type of fire they are designed to suppress:

  • Class A - ordinary combustibles: wood, paper, fabric. Offices, warehouses, storage areas.
  • Class B - flammable liquids: fuel, oil, paint, solvents. Workshops, generators, vehicle bays.
  • Class C - energized electrical equipment. Server rooms, electrical panels, generator sets.

An ABC-rated extinguisher covers all three classes and is the standard recommendation for most Guyanese workplaces where the exact fire risk cannot be isolated to a single class.

What we stock:

  • Buckeye 2.5 lb ABC Fire Extinguisher - compact and effective. Suitable for vehicles, site offices, and small commercial spaces where a full-size unit would be impractical.
  • ColdFire Tactical Fire Extinguisher - water-based suppressant that works by cooling and smothering the fire. No powder residue - the right choice for server rooms, kitchens, and environments where cleanup matters.
  • Kidde I9040 Ionization Smoke Alarm - required in all occupied buildings as early warning before a fire develops.
  • Kidde 9V replacement batteries - smoke alarms with dead batteries are non-functional. Replace batteries annually at minimum.
Inspection reminder: Check your extinguisher pressure gauge monthly. Professional servicing is required annually. An out-of-service extinguisher provides zero protection.

5. Alcohol wipes and surface disinfection

Alcohol wipes are among the most widely searched safety and hygiene products in Guyana - and one of the easiest to get wrong. The key variable is alcohol concentration. Isopropyl alcohol wipes need a minimum 70% concentration to be effective as a disinfectant. Products below this threshold may clean surfaces but will not reliably kill bacteria and viruses.

Where alcohol wipes and surface disinfection products are essential:

  • First aid - wound cleaning before dressing application
  • Equipment and tool sanitation - shared tools on site that pass between workers
  • Medical and laboratory environments - surface decontamination between procedures
  • Office and commercial spaces - shared desks, keyboards, door handles, and high-touch surfaces

Beyond wipes, we carry Lysol Disinfectant Spray (19 oz) - which kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on hard surfaces - and BEEP Disinfectant Spray, widely used across commercial and industrial settings in Guyana for surface sanitation.

For hand hygiene: Fast Orange Hand Cleaner by Permatex is a heavy-duty waterless citrus-based cleaner for mechanics, welders, and industrial workers dealing with grease and oil. Bio Hand Sanitizer is available for touch-free general hygiene maintenance.
